How Long Does a
Spray Tan Last?

The honest answer, plus everything you're probably doing wrong that's making it fade faster.

You googled this because you just dropped money on a spray tan and it lasted four days. Or you have an event Saturday and you're trying to do the math. Either way, the internet has been unhelpfully vague about this for years, so let's fix that.

The short answer is seven to ten days. The longer answer involves your shower routine, your moisturizer situation, and whether or not you've been getting into chlorine pools like it's your job. Let's get into it.

Why Your Tan Is Basically on a Timer

A spray tan works by staining the outermost layer of your skin with DHA, a colorless sugar derived from plants that reacts with the amino acids in your skin cells to create that golden color. It sounds very science-y and it is. The catch is that it only lives in the very top layer of skin, and your skin naturally sheds those cells every single day.

So your tan isn't really fading. It's exfoliating off. This is either reassuring or mildly horrifying depending on how you look at it.

"Your spray tan doesn't just fade. It exfoliates away with your skin. The better you prepare, the more evenly and slowly it goes."

This also explains why your elbows and ankles always go first. Those areas exfoliate faster because they're drier and experience more friction. This is not a spray tan problem. This is a skin biology problem. But it is a prep-and-aftercare-solvable problem, which is the good news.

What Actually Determines How Long It Lasts

Skin Preparation

This is the big one. If you show up to your appointment without exfoliating, you're basically getting your tan applied to a layer of skin that's already halfway out the door. It will develop unevenly and leave faster than you'd like. Exfoliate the day before, not the day of. Shave or wax 24 hours ahead of time. Show up with clean, dry skin and no lotion, deodorant, or perfume.

We know. It feels like a lot of rules. It's worth it.

Aftercare

The first eight hours after your spray tan are genuinely critical. No water, no sweating, no tight clothing. After that, daily moisturizing is the single most effective thing you can do to keep the color looking good. Hydrated skin sheds more slowly. Dry skin sheds fast and takes your tan with it.

Also: get a sulfate-free body wash. Regular soap is actively working against you here.

Your Relationship with Water

Chlorine pools, salt water, hot tubs, long hot showers. All of these accelerate how quickly your skin exfoliates. If you're heading to the beach the day after your appointment, just know you're essentially pressure washing your tan off in real time. We're not saying don't go. We're saying manage your expectations.

For vacations, book your spray tan two days before you leave. Not the night before you get in the ocean.

Your Skin Type

Oilier skin types tend to fade faster because the skin's natural oils break down the DHA reaction over time. Drier skin actually holds color longer, though it's also more prone to uneven fading if you skip moisturizer. You can't change your skin type, but knowing which one you have helps you plan your appointment timing and your aftercare routine accordingly.

The Cheat Sheet
  • Exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment, not the morning of
  • Shave or wax at least 24 hours before, never after
  • No lotion, deodorant, or perfume on the day of your appointment
  • Wait at least 8 hours before your first shower
  • Switch to a sulfate-free body wash
  • Moisturize every single day, especially elbows, knees, and ankles
  • Pat dry after showering. Not rub. Pat.
  • Limit pool and ocean time in the first few days

When to Book Before Your Event

One to two days before is the sweet spot. This gives the color time to fully develop, lets the initial bronzer wash off, and ensures you're not showing up somewhere important still smelling faintly of the solution. Booking the morning of your event is not recommended unless you enjoy the bronzer phase as a lifestyle.

For weddings specifically, do a trial session two to three weeks out to dial in your shade. Then book your final application two days before. No surprises, no stress, golden arms in every photo.

How Often Should You Actually Be Booking

Every two to three weeks is the answer for people who want consistent, year-round color. This lets your previous tan fade fully before the next one goes on, which keeps the color looking fresh instead of layered and strange.

If you're booking this regularly, a membership is genuinely the better option. You save money, your slot is already reserved, and you never have to remember to book because it just happens. Which is kind of the whole point of a concierge service.

The bottom line: seven to ten days with normal care, up to twelve with good prep and aftercare. If yours has been fading faster than that, it's almost definitely a preparation issue and not some kind of personal failing. Book a session with us and we'll walk you through everything before we start.

We come to you. You don't even have to drive anywhere. There's really no reason not to.
